What are the early signs my water heater is failing?

The short answer
The short answer
Look for water around the unit, changes in hot water, unusual noises, or visible corrosion. Handling these signs early can limit the work to the water heater instead of allowing a leak or failure to affect nearby walls, floors, or other parts of the home.
Check for signs around the water heater
Water near the base of the unit is one of the clearest warning signs. Check the floor around the water heater and look at the connections, valves, and tank for moisture, rust, or corrosion. Even a small amount of water deserves attention because the source may not be obvious from the floor alone.
A water heater can also show trouble through changes in performance. Hot water that runs out sooner than usual, water that does not reach the expected temperature, or water with unusual discoloration can all point to a problem that needs to be assessed.
Pay attention to sounds and visible condition
Popping, rumbling, or other new sounds from the unit are worth noting, especially when they happen during heating. A change in sound does not identify the exact repair, but it is a reason to have the water heater checked before the problem becomes a loss of hot water or a leak.
Look over the tank and its fittings without taking anything apart. Corrosion, damp insulation, dripping connections, or a pressure relief area that stays wet should not be ignored. Do not remove covers or attempt a repair if doing so could expose you to hot water, gas, or electrical parts.
What putting it off can add to the job
A problem that starts at the water heater can become a water damage problem if a leak continues. Water may reach nearby drywall, flooring, cabinets, or stored items, turning a water heater repair or installation into additional cleanup and repair work.
Waiting can also leave you without reliable hot water at a less convenient time. If the unit is already showing signs of leakage, corrosion, or poor performance, arrange an assessment while the surrounding area is still dry and accessible. A contractor can determine whether the unit needs repair or replacement and explain the work involved.
Is a small amount of water around a water heater serious?
It can be. Water may come from a connection, valve, or the tank itself, and the source is not always clear from the floor. Have the area checked rather than assuming a small leak will stay small.
Should I replace a water heater that is making new noises?
Not necessarily. New sounds are a reason for an assessment, not proof that replacement is required. The condition of the unit, the source of the sound, and its hot water performance all affect the next step.
What should I do if the water heater is leaking?
Keep people away from hot water and wet electrical areas, and contact a contractor for help. If you can do so safely, limit nearby water exposure while waiting for the source and condition of the leak to be assessed.
